As Singapore turns 52, what identity does the country need to build in the world at large to maintain its distinctive edge?

SINGAPORE’S reputation for stellar economic achievement in just five decades is indeed legendary. We have recently vaulted ahead in the world of sports, and are edging forward on the artistic stage, too. These are encouraging signs of a society that is maturing and becoming more well-rounded.

With other cities rising in repute as commercial hubs in recent times, Singapore will still need to work hard to maintain its economic competitiveness. As to the question of identity, the more cosmopolitan we become, the more imperative it becomes to retain our cultural heritage.

Apart from these areas in which we already excel, I believe we need to put more focus on the “softer” aspects of society, such as cultivating a nation that can also be known for being caring and kind, and this is my wish for Singapore.
